Gayatri Mantra

Rig Veda 3.62.10 — the prayer for illumined intellect

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वःतत्सवितुर्वरेण्यंभर्गो देवस्य धीमहिधियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्

oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥtat savitur vareṇyaṃbhargo devasya dhīmahidhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt

What does the Gayatri Mantra mean?

We meditate on the adorable splendour of Savitr, the divine vivifier. May that light impel our understanding. It is addressed to the sun as the source of consciousness rather than of heat, and asks not for wealth or protection but for clarity of mind.

When it is chanted

Traditionally recited at sunrise, midday and sunset as part of sandhyavandanam. It is the mantra most often given at the upanayana ceremony.

Surya and graha shanti pujas
